National Voters’ Day 2026: President Droupadi Murmu Leads 16th Celebrations, Focus on First-Time Voters
New Delhi | January 25, 2026 — India is observing the 16th National Voters’ Day today, reaffirming the country’s commitment to democratic values and citizen participation. President Droupadi Murmu is leading the national-level celebrations in New Delhi, held under the theme “My India, My Vote.”
The annual event, organised by the Election Commission of India (ECI), highlights the importance of voting in the world’s largest democracy, with a special focus this year on first-time voters and youth participation.
President Murmu’s Message on Democratic Responsibility
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu stressed that voting is not only a constitutional right but also a moral responsibility. She encouraged young and newly eligible voters to actively take part in shaping India’s future through informed and ethical voting.
“The strength of Indian democracy lies in the participation of every citizen, especially our youth,” the President said, underlining the need for awareness, inclusion, and electoral integrity.
Theme 2026: “My India, My Vote”
The theme “My India, My Vote” reflects the growing emphasis on personal ownership of democracy. It aims to inspire citizens—particularly 18–22-year-old voters—to register, verify their details, and participate actively in elections at all levels.
The Election Commission is also promoting:
-
Digital voter services
-
Ethical voting practices
-
Inclusive participation of women and marginalized communities
Honouring First-Time and Model Voters
As part of the celebrations, the ECI felicitated:
-
First-time voters
-
Outstanding Booth Level Officers (BLOs)
-
Election officials who contributed to smooth and transparent electoral processes
New voter identity cards were also distributed to young electors, marking a symbolic entry into democratic participation.
Why National Voters’ Day Is Celebrated
National Voters’ Day is observed every year on January 25 to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India, established in 1950. The day aims to:
-
Encourage voter registration
-
Increase turnout in elections
-
Promote awareness about electoral rights
India currently has over 96 crore registered voters, making voter awareness and participation more crucial than ever.
Focus on Youth Ahead of Upcoming Elections
With several state and national elections approaching, this year’s Voters’ Day holds added significance. The Election Commission is rolling out voter education programs in colleges, universities, and digital platforms to ensure that young voters are informed and empowered.
