Why is the u.s. falling behind in education

🔴 US High School Students Continue to Fall Behind in Math and Reading

US high school students are facing a serious academic setback, as new data shows a continued decline in math, reading, and science performance—reaching the lowest levels seen in over two decades.

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called the nation’s report card, 12th graders’ reading and math scores dropped to historic lows in the first post-pandemic assessment. Eighth graders also showed a sharp decline in science skills.

📉 A Long-Term Problem, Not Just COVID

While the COVID-19 pandemic worsened learning loss, experts say the downward trend started long before school closures. Factors contributing to the decline include:

  • Increased screen time and shorter attention spans

  • Reduced reading of long-form texts

  • Fewer books assigned in classrooms

  • Decline in hands-on, inquiry-based learning

Education experts warn that students are graduating with fewer essential skills at a time when the workforce demands more—not less—academic and critical thinking ability.

📚 Reading and Math at Alarming Levels

  • 32% of high school seniors scored below basic reading levels

  • 45% scored below basic in math, the highest in nearly 20 years

  • Only 33% are prepared for college-level math, down from 37% in 2019

These results signal growing challenges for college readiness and future employment.

⚠️ Widening Achievement Gaps

The gap between top- and bottom-performing students is now the widest ever recorded in:

  • 8th grade science

  • 12th grade math

Additionally, a gender gap in STEM subjects has reappeared, with girls experiencing sharper declines after years of progress—largely due to disrupted support programs during and after the pandemic.

🧠 Why This Matters

Educators and policymakers warn that without urgent intervention, this learning crisis could affect the economy, innovation, and social equity for years to come.

“These students are stepping into adulthood with fewer skills than those before them—at a time when society demands more,” said NAEP officials.
