Bengaluru Real Estate Tycoon CJ Roy Dies by Suicide Amid Ongoing Income Tax Raids
Confident Group Chairman and prominent real estate developer C J Roy (57) was found dead at his Bengaluru office on Friday in what police have described as a suspected case of suicide. The incident occurred while Income Tax Department raids were underway at companies linked to him, according to official sources.
Senior police officials confirmed that Roy was taken to a private hospital in HSR Layout, where he was declared dead on arrival. Authorities said preliminary investigations suggest he may have taken the extreme step during questioning by tax officials.
Income Tax Raids Underway
The Income Tax Department had launched a series of searches on Thursday across multiple locations connected to Roy and his business operations. Sources indicated that the raids were part of an investigation into alleged assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh told reporters that the incident took place between 3 pm and 3:30 pm within the Ashoka Nagar police station limits.
“Prima facie, it appears that the founder and chairperson of the Confident Group has died by suicide. The matter is under investigation, and we are examining all possible angles,” Singh said.
He added that the tax team involved in the searches was reportedly from Kerala and that police would record their statements as part of the ongoing probe.
Family and Company React
Roy’s brother, speaking to a regional news channel, claimed that the Income Tax team had first visited in December and returned again on January 28, allegedly asking Roy to come back from Dubai for further questioning.
In an official statement posted on social media, the Confident Group paid tribute to its chairman, calling him a “beloved leader and visionary.”
“The values he stood for and the path he showed us will continue to guide our journey forward. The entire Confident Group family mourns this sudden and irreparable loss,” the statement read.
A Prominent Name in Real Estate and Entertainment
A native of Kochi, Kerala, C J Roy built Confident Group into a major real estate brand with a strong presence across southern India, particularly in Kerala and Karnataka.
Beyond real estate, Roy was also associated with the Malayalam film industry. He produced high-profile projects, including Mohanlal’s 2012 film Casanova. The Confident Group also served as a title sponsor for multiple seasons of the popular reality show Bigg Boss Malayalam.
Industry in Shock
News of Roy’s death has sent shockwaves through the real estate sector and among thousands of customers and business partners associated with the Confident Group. Industry leaders and associates have expressed condolences, describing him as a bold entrepreneur who played a key role in shaping modern real estate development in the region.
